You’re prob­a­bly famil­iar with the effect of drop­ping mint fla­vored Men­tos can­dies in a bot­tle of Diet Coke. But in case you’re not, check out this video, in which Diet Coke and Men­tos gey­sers are timed to mimic the Bel­la­gio foun­tain:

But why do Diet Coke, as opposed to reg­u­lar Coke, and mint fla­vored Men­tos, as opposed to the fruit fla­vored vari­ety, make the best gey­sers? Appar­ently, the aspar­tame (arti­fi­cial sweet­ener) in Diet Coke con­tributes to the reac­tion, as does the com­par­a­tively rougher sur­face of mint Men­tos; more bub­bles can form in the nooks and cran­nies, ulti­mately pro­duc­ing a fizzier explosion.
